Surprise! Surprise! My old friend Tom didn't show up again! He was supposed to come along to Steve's leaving bash but he had less interesting things to do.
My cool friend from way back when has become one of those dull, smug people in a dull, smug relationship.

I'm sorry he disappointed you again. Being in a relationship doesn't mean that you have the right to be so rude to your oldest friends. He owes you (and Steve) a big apology.
I love the "he had less interesting things to do" bit. Have you said as much to him? Perhaps in slightly different (uh, stronger, with a lot of name-calling) language? Some people don't even realize that they're doing this.
I tend to keep people "on the list" and then not worry much when they don't show if it's a group thing. Their loss, I figure.
